WHAT IS PPR : PP-R is a thermoplastic polyolefin which is easy to process into pipes & fittings with superior chemical & physical properties. Polypropylene homopolymer (PP – H) is made by polymerizing propylene in the presence of a catalyst at moderate temperatures and pressures.

WORLD TREND IN PP-R PIPES

PP-R pipes have been replacing copper & lead plumbing pipes in Europe because of cost to benefit ratio favoring PPR. In Asian countries GI pipes are practiced in general for plumbing applications.
China has recently passed a law mandating the use of PP-R pipes for all new buildings to save on conventional metals which are scarce & save on energy losses.
PP-R in turn consume less energy & its use will save on precious & limited metals. India needs to have such law very soon otherwise there will be very little left in earth.
In countries where environment is cold PP-R pipes are used in floor heating applications. This concept is at very nascent stage in India.

Process of Manufacturing PP-R Pipes :

The mixture of Polypropylene-R Granuals and master batch (for colour) is passed through the heated Barrel zone where it melts. The material after passing through the barrel zone passes through the Die head zone and finally comes out of the die in the shape of pipe. The pipe then passes through the vaccume tank and spray bath where the pipe takes the round shape by the help of vacuum and is cooled. The haul off helps to pull the pipe. The pipes are then cut into their desired lengths.
